With the ongoing pandemic, Assam is having a steep surge in Covid-19 positive cases, the whole of government machinery is engaged to control it’s spread. The lock-downs have been imposed as a necessity, but on the other hand it has entirely paralyzed the economy rendering many people with no source of income. And if that was not enough the incessant rains swelled the rivers to an extent, where more than 40% of landmass of Assam is inundated with flood waters, where scores of villages lines submerged, crop land destroyed with deluge, causing much havoc to the poor villagers. Thus, the combination of pandemic and flood have made the people income-less and homeless pushing them to starvation and the most painful of deaths. Assam has lost 64 souls to Covid-19 and 127 to the floods. And while the most infrastructure has been readied to fight the Covid-19 but there is little to none preparation for the floods. At this juncture where almost all government agencies are engaged to fight with Covid-19, Dr. Ambedkar Mission, an NGO from Assam, under the guidance and leadership of its president Dulal Ch. Medhi has taken upon itself to reach out to the flood affected people of Boko and nearby areas, to provide them with relief material and medicine. The team of the NGO has taken the risky and treacherous journey to reach the place through vehicle, country boat and on foot. But all that danger stood nowhere before the plight of the poor people marooned by flood waters. They had no access to food, water and medicine and when they saw what the team brought with them they reacted to the them as if God send. After many gloomy days ,it was for many, first such day when they could see some hope for survival. To the team it was not a new sight but the gratitude of the people have always overwhelmed them. Dr. Ambedkar Mission, Assam has been continuously working to help the poor and needy since it’s inception in 1994 and have at all times came to the rescue of people affected by such calamity. It is already engaged in distributing relief material to the villagers who are now jobless due to lock-downs for pandemic control. And now with the ugly face of flood raring to wipe out villages after villages, Dr. Ambedkar Mission, Assam, cannot but go amidst the affected people and help them in whatever possible way it can.
As put in words by Mr. Dulal Ch. Medhi
” the damage that has been caused is much more than what we can do alone to address it, but with your generous contribution we can definitely make a difference. Therefore, we call out to the kind hearted people and the organizations to come forward and help us to help the poor flood affected people of Assam. “
